Sometimes High Performance Plastics Are The Best Answer

Julia: So, are there some places where it is possible to get rid of plastics?

Absolutely.

Are there places where high performance plastics are the best answer?

Yes.

Now, can they be made from agricultural waste instead of from petroleum?

Well, that’s really a question of how scalable those alternatives are and the cost and everything else, and how quickly could we move away from that?

But there’s definitely some places.

I remember I’m part of a zero waste group. Someone says, ‘Oh, I wanna find big glass jars to store my five pound thing of flour because I don’t wanna use plastic.’ ‘Well, hello! I have Tupperware containers that I’ve had since 1990. They don’t break when you drop them.’

John: Yep.

Julia: Anyway, they don’t break when you drop them. They can get scratched. And that’s okay! They can last for decades. But disposable plastic packaging? I think we can do away with almost all of that.
